9 Patch Pattern Confusion

During my travels I purchased a pattern called Checkered 9 Patch by Linda Jones. I think it was from a shop in Arizona and the designer signed it. My confusion is this. It is a checkered 9 patch that when finished is 6.5 inch block.

It is set on point so the pattern has me cut additional 5.5 inch squares and then cut these on the diagonal. They are then attached to the sides of the 9 patch blocks and this new block is squared to 8.5 inches.

My 5.5 inch squares cut on the diagonal aren't even close to the 6.5 inch sides of the original 9 patch. They are a good inch or so longer. I tried sewing them trying to get the points right but this didn't work. Am I missing something?

Not sure of your pattern but setting triangles are usually bigger than needed so the can be squared up later.

I like my triangles closer to block size too.

I think a 5" square would get you a lot closer with less waste.
Maybe cut a 5" out of scrap and see if that is closer. ...

As Claire said, they are probably bigger to allow for trimming. You would want a minimum of 1/4" to not cut off your points, and more if you are adding borders.

No, you're not missing something; these measurements sound correct. The triangles need to be that size and as Claire and Suzanne have said, the resulting square will need to be trimmed. Jenny shows you how to do it (around the 5:40 mark) in this 9 Patch on Point tutorial:
