    Default Gutermann's cotton thread

This is the first time I've used Gutermann's so I have nothing to compare to. I know some people here do use it.

    Question:

Does it always do a kinky curl when it comes off the spool?? It's really annoying and sometimes causes the thread to come out of the first guide eye. I don't use the thread holder located on the machine, I use one of the ones that stand behind the machine. I tried it so the thread would come off the spool from both directions but neither one helps the problem.

    Any suggestions or thoughts?

Wow. I've never had that happen with Gutermann, but I just checked a spool and I have the 100% Polyester.

The only suggestion I have is to try the vertical spool holder on your machine. The shorter distance between thread spool and machine might help. Of course, the experts say that a longer distance helps to uncurl your thread, but that's not happening for you.

Thanks for the suggestion Guitar Gramma! HaHa yes, the longer distance just made more and more curls :-) I'll try this when I put the white back on. I'm shifting back and forth between projects lately.

I use Gutermann cotton all the time. My Janome machines as well as the Brother love it.

I don't like that brand. Even for hand sewing I find it very tangly but it does come in a nice range of colors.

I just tried it as Guitar Grandma suggested. It works far better when I spool it from my machine. Actually almost looks straight that way. Does do some looping under the pressure foot when in the up position but that did seem to be the "fix".

Nwmnteacher, It's the Brother I'm using it on. :-/

I wonder if you might have grabbed a spool of the hand quilting cotton? It's got some kind of coating on it that can gum up a sewing machine and perhaps cause it to coil off the spool. Gutermann natural cotton thread has an orange-ish spool and the hand quilting one comes on a sort of taupe-ish spool.

Yes, I very well could have. I'm not very familiar with their products. Also it is a taupe-ish spool. The way it comes off the spool kind of reminds me of the way floss does so I'll bet you're right. hummm, I'll have to watch to see any signs of gumming. Oh my!.

This is indeed a tangled web of concerns!
