Marking mini charms

Is there an easy way to make a diagonal mark on a 2 1/2” square so that the fabric doesn’t stretch out and distort the mark/fabric? The fabric will be sprayed with sizing before cutting. Thanks!

I did a bunch yesterday, lay your square on a piece of sandpaper then mark with a pencil. I don't think any of mine stretched.

Like Claire I use sandpaper under the squares. I also start marking from the center working out to both corners.
