On October 21, 1928, 17-year-old aviator Elinor Smith flew her Waco biplane under the four bridges that span New York City's East River.

That bit of daredevil flying (by a teenage girl, no less!) made her a national celebrity.

She went on to set endurance and altitude records for female flyers, and in 1934 she became the first woman to have her photo on a Wheaties box.
