Default Anyone use something besides batting to quilt with?

Hi - has anyone used something besides batting to quilt with? i would like to make a few table runners but want them more flat than like a quilt, and was thinking maybe using something like flannel or fleece as a layer? Anyone ever done this?
    thanks!

Do it all the time. Worn out bath towels work great for trivets where you don't want the heat to go through. Jeans for potholders. Leaves them bendable but protects your fingers. Fleece doesn't need batting. I use the fusible fleece as the back of runners. Helps with the dusting when someone "pops" in ( don't try to tell me you haven't done that one!).

Fantastic! i figured i couldn't go wrong using something else. and probably cheaper too!
And the best story i ever heard about cleaning was that my best friends; mom would grab the vacuum cleaner when the doorbell rang and put it in the middle of the room and say 'sorry i was just getting ready to clean'! LOL

    LOL - good one!

I throw lysol wipes on the kitchen floor to wipe up spots when I find out someone is coming over before I do house work!

I use flannel a lot in regular quilts when I don't want a thick quilt. I do prewash it first. I also prewash the cotton fabric so it's all preshrunk.

I also use flannel inbetween layers in a rag quilt. It rags nicely.

I like the idea of using towels. Great way to repurpose old towels.

I made some "Linus" type quilts for my cast of "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown" and I wanted to minimize cost. So I used polarfleece for the backing and no batting. I am still getting comments from the cast when I see them out and about that they really love their "Linus" blankets and use them all the time. The fleece is 58" wide so I just needed the length of the quilt of the fleece, and it was much less expensive than backing plus batting. I bought it at JoAnns where fleece is perpetually on sale or discounted with coupons. It quilted up nicely and made a decent weight quilt.

    Good Morning jean,
I am looking for some advice. I saw your post regarding using fleece as backing.. Using fleece as backing would make a good sized dent in my "stuff". I have a Janome 66oop,which I think you are familiar with. I would like to use the serpentine stitch to quilt, but have had problems sewing fleece in the past even using the walking foot. Made jackets for the boys fabric just seemed too thick. What stitch length, pressure, etc is best to use.
Any advice you can give would be appreciated.
    Thanks Kathy

I have used arcylic felt for table runners, coasters, and tree skirt. Works nicely.

Jean, this made me laugh. Such an elegant way to describe the reality.

that is such a great idea, i've been wanting to try a rag quilt and sounds like the fleece work fantastically
