Default How wide should a border be?

Wow I am finally done with the hexagon quilt except the border. It is a complete copy of the one Jenny made, except I made mine much larger. It will fit a double or full size bed, or possible a queen by the time the border is on. Here is a link to Jenny's so you can see it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UX9Z_Zlfzo

My question is, since I made my quilt so much bigger, how wide should the border be? Is there a generally accepted ratio? Or should I just use 5.5" like Jenny does for the smaller version?

Best answer..how wide do you want it to be?
TRUTH is seldom appreciated, unless you happen to agree with it. When you don't agree, you just call it rude.

    It's up to you.

I've done a 2.5" inner border, 5" piano key border, then a 6" outer border. It just depends on how much more you want to put into the quilt.

Lay it on the bed it's intended for and see how it lays on the bed and the drop on the sides. Since it is a bed quilt you want it wide and long enough that body parts won't stick out and get cold!

Jinny Beyer makes a tool called the Golden Gauge Calipers. It looks like an awkward pair of plastic scissors with three blades. The blades open at different "speeds." But the openings are perfectly proportioned to each other and help you to determine a balanced set of border widths. It's quite a fascinating tool.

I usually decide border width by how much border fabric I have to use. Lots of fabric equals a wider border.

I am amazed there seems to be a tool for everything! I am a no border person, I just make my quilts bigger to make up for extra width or length.

If you need a certain size on your quilt, don't forget to consider shrinkage after the quilt is washed. A friend made pillow shams to pillow sizes and they shrunk.
