Default My son's first real sewing project...

[I know this is technically not "quilting" but since it was made on a sewing machine using the same type of flannel fabric the quilt shop sells, we can pretend this is piecing a shorts-shaped flannel quilt top]

My son, who some of you may remember arrived in the middle of a snow storm a little over 5 years ago, has at on my lap and "helped me sew" a few times but I really wanted him to get a chance to actually sew something himself. I purchased a well-loved and well-worn1925 Singer Model 66 off Craigslist which needed some parts and restoration. I did a mild restoration and a hand crank conversion on it and built wooden base for it. This afternoon I helped my son learn to draft a basic shorts pattern on cardboard and transfer it onto the fabric using tailor's chalk.

That moment when your sewing machine is 89 years older than you are....

And here he is modeling the finished product. I cheated and ran all the exposed seams through my [modern] serger so the shorts will be washable. I can teach a lot of things but I don't think I have the patience to teach french seams to an impatient 5 year old.

They are by no means the finest garment I've ever had hand in producing, but they turned out pretty great considering I was winging it and trying to go fast enough to keep a 5 year old's attention.

His 3 year old sister wants to make "pink pants" so we'll see what she can do in a few days.
Loosely based on a true story.

Awesome and what a good bonding moment. He (and you) will remember those shorts for a long time.

cute kid and great shorts. You have just assured that he won't ever have to go naked. And who knows maybe you have a budding Ralph Lauren or Calvin Klein. Good job Dad.

They are perfect and I'm certain he will want to keep these for a long time. I think it's wonderful that he has his dad's creative bug.
