Default Tuesday Trivia: Quebec, Canada 🇨🇦

    Some Interesting Facts about Quebec:

Jacques Cartier, a French explorer landed in 1535. It wasn’t until 1608 when Samuel de Champlain arrived that a permanent wooden fort and fur trading post were set up.

Quebec City – not Montreal – is the capital of the province of Quebec.

The word “Kebec” is an Algonquin word meaning “Where The River Narrows.”

Quebec City’s location is at the intersection of the St. Lawrence and the St. Charles River.

Quebec City’s 411th anniversary is this year. It’s the oldest French speaking community in North America.

Quebec City is the only walled city north of Mexico. It has 4.6 kilometers (2.8 miles) of walls.

Only about 1.5% of the population speaks English. Over 95% of the population is French speaking. But more than a third of the population can speak both English and French.

The Chateau Frontenac is the world’s most photographed hotel.

Not far from downtown Quebec City sits the beautiful Montmorency Falls. At 83 meters tall they are a whopping 30 meters higher than Niagara Falls. You’ll find lots to do around the falls including zip-lining and a walk along a boardwalk that provides some airy views.

The Battle of the Plains of Abraham (1759) was a turning point in the Seven Years’ War, at whose end France surrendered Quebec to the British.

America once invaded Quebec. The Battle of Chateauguay took place on October 26, 1813 during the War of 1812. 4,000 Americans attempted to take Montreal but were repulsed by 1,630 French Canadians. If the Americans had been successful, all subsequent North American history would have been different and there might not even be a Canada today.

The Appalachian Mountains run through Quebec. The mountain range keeps going after it hits the border and extends through Quebec all the way up to Labrador.

It's a beautiful place to visit. I've stayed at Chateau Frontenac several times and just love going there. The food, the ambiance, the horse drawn carriages, the culture -- it's a very European feel. Montreal is also another favorite city to drive to and take in some events.

Enjoy life and do what makes you happy. Everything else will follow.

Every day I try to do one thing that challenges my comfort zone.
