My first quilt was a 3 strip Rail Fence. Gave it to my mom and she loved it mistakes and all. Don't try to be perfect in the beginning. Just do your best and have fun. People who have quilted for years and years are still chasing perfection. Perfect is over rated. Everyone has there own level of good enough for them. Welcome to the board lots of info here, ask questions someone will have the answer for you. Have fun.

Placemats are a nice way to start, especially if you are going to do the actual quilting. Fence rails do make a pretty placemats. Here is a tutorial from Jenny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-9qG-XZTJM.
