Default Freemotion quilting or stitch in the ditch

    Hi all,

My quilt was made with 10" squares. I was told once that with squares that big I would need to do a diagonal line across the squares to hold the batting. I am worried the line will take away from the design on the quilt. I am wondering if free motion quilting might be a better route. I could just do an open meandering pattern, which I hope won't take away from the quilt design. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

You just need to be sure and quilt as close together as your batting recommends.
A free motion meander always looks good to me.

Use lightweight thread that doesn't contrast and FMQ meander all around. No one will notice the quilting if it's an all-over design like that.

Or you could do a pattern of straight lines both across and up and down, making a cross hatch. It would reinforce the repetitive pattern of the squares. I think.

I think any design would be fine on this. As Claire mentioned, just make sure your quilting is close enough for the batting recommendations. I think an allover would look good or the X's through the blocks. I would probably try a lightweight thread that would blend into the various colors you have in the quilt or a variegated purple.

By the way, your quilt is beautiful.

Lovely quilt. I am reminded of stained glass. If this were my quilt, I would be thinking of the quilting as either rain or sun. If I went with rain, I might try meander FMQ, but because I am bad at that still, Id probably do wavy lines with little drops. If I went with sun, I might pretend the sun was in the upper left quadrant and do straight lines radiating from that spot.

Thank you both for the responses. I like the idea of rain or sun.
