Default My DIY for marking SA on sewing machine

I am sewing 1 inch strips together to make little 2 inch blocks, and they need a 1/8 inch seam allowance. My presser foot has a 1/4 inch guide that has me spoiled with that ridge but the 1/4 inch was too big of a SA for this. Last week I struggled experimenting with marking a 1/8 guide that really worked. I tried layers of sticky notes, layers of cardboard, blue painters tape, even tried taping down an old 3 inch square of plexiglass laying around. I was not satisfied with anything. I wanted a wall! Something rigid and accurate that would not move. Yesterday I was helping my GK pick up toys and bingo, it hit me! Legos! What could possibly make a better wall than that? So I marked my machine at the 1/8th mark with eraseable marker, then took two skinny little Legos and made a 2 brick wall, and carefully taped them to my machine with hospital tape. It's perfect. I made 20 blocks and they turned out so good that only 2 had to be trimmed about 1/16th of an inch and the others were all perfect. So I just thought I would share my magic solution with you.

Wow, that sounds great! Any chance you can post a picture of what you did? I'd love to see where the tape sits and how you positioned the Legos around the machine foot.

Good morning all. Great idea, and I have to warn you all. Hospital tape might mar the surface of your machines and if you are using a vintage one, I really encourage you not to use it. Recently saw a neat trick with a think rubber band stretched around the base of the machine parallel with the markings generally on the needle plate. It might not work for all, but no damage to the machine's finish.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zja8yEXYJL4

I like the idea of using rubber bands so when I am done with this project I might try that. My sewing machine where my wall is taped down is just plastic so I think any leftover tape redidue could be remived with rubbing alcohol. Here is a picture of my wall and what I am making.

I have no doubt you will find lego at a goodwill store. Or ask friends who have children for a couple.
Blessed are the children of the piecemakers for they shall inherit the quilts!
