Default What was used to back quilts made in 1930s?

I have just made a top using feedsack from the 30s, going to use wool batting and tie it. I want to keep it authentic. Any suggestions?

Old quilters never die, they just go batty!

The thirties were a "use up/recycle" time in the US so I would guess they used what they had. Feed sacks come to mind but I think they would have used sheets or tablecloths or perhaps muslin if they were more wealthy.
There are wide goods in 30s repo designs which is what I used on a 30s style quilt.

My grandmother was a prolific topper from the 20's thruthe 40's. She was a farm woman and most of the tops were made from her girls worn out dresses. The backs were made from a very thin muslin. I don't know if it was used and that is why it was so thin or maybe it just was thin.

I second the sheets. They used to be made in cotton and plain white. One of my grandmothers always used sheets.

I have a few family quilts from the 30's and feed sacks and old sheets were used. There probably wasn't money to go out and buy new fabric for the backs. Back then quilts were used on beds and washed almost weekly. I have an old quilt that was backed with used ballot bags that were given to my GG Rose. Over the years the India ink has faded but even though it's faint you can see they are from McDonald County. I'm sure she didn't realize she was sewing history into her quilt...she had four little girls to keep warm.
