    Salvage edge

Are they making fabric with a usable salvage? I bought this remnant piece and cut it this morning for my flip flop quilt. I noticed the white strip as I was about to sew. Is it usable? Opinions? Thank you.

The weave is denser in the selvage edge. I cut it off, there are books of items that are made with the selvages, totes, zipper bags.

As Katrina mentioned, I cut it off.

Katrina, I like some of the different ideas shown on the link. Thanks for sharing.

I save selveges that are pretty or colorful, have words or info. Some have flowers, dots, etc also the fabric line name and sometimes name of mfg.I put these into scrap quilts. The other day I was looking through a bin of old calico, thinking as I looked at one piece, wow ihave had this for awhile--and noticed on the selvege it said 1998. So that would definitely be a keeper. I do not save selveges that are just plain white strips like your picture. Just cut big if you plan to reuse these so your seam allow doesn't use up all the pretty parts.

            Re: Salvage edge

Most of the time I do not save selvages unless I want the name of the fabric, the designer, etc. for reference. I have no interest in strip piecing such narrow strips. As it is, I do poorly at string quilts.

I use selvages all the time, if the print is continuous. If it is white, then I trim just enough so that it is captured in the seam.
But many a time I just leave it in there.
