That's one of the nicest T-shirts I've seen, so evocative of Hawaii. The only thing I could think of would be to use some of the parts you cut off to fill in the arm/neck hole so you can cut a square. or maybe cut a free form shape or oval & back it with a contrasting colored square ….
Sorry I cant come up with a better idea, but probably someone will

I think you have enough to cut it diagonally along the running guy and then turn the opposite piece and stitch it like a HST. Maybe put a strip down thru it like a lattice quilt

My first thought was to turn it into an applique--Not sure how, but worth thinking about.

When I did my T-shirt quilt, there were a couple of shirts that posed similar problems. The solution closest to your problem would be to cut the design out with an edge to turn under. Then cut a piece of t-shirt material into a square or rectangle big enough for the design to fit. Then treat it like an appliqué. I did this with a piece off a shirt that was not big enough --- just appliquéd it (by machine) onto a larger piece of t-shirt fabric that was the size I needed. Good luck

Make your square on point over the image. That should capture the man, the title, and the underfoot writing.
