    Default Another applique question

I put a large dog and paw prints on this quilt top for my new niece or nephew...but now that I'm ready to applique a couple bones...the bright background is showing right through the white fabric for the bones. Has anyone used double layers of fabric in applique? I'm concerned it won't lay flat after several washings. OR...that it will be far too stiff if I use two layers of the fusible.

I’ve used a layer of batting behind applique before, it keeps colors from showing through and gives a bit of body to the applique, sort of a mini trapunto.

After you finish the applique, go behind and trim away that second layer of fabric behind the bone. It will be fine.

Cut two layers of white material in the bone pattern, sew together, carefully cut a slit in one side and turn right side out, blanket stitch on to the quilt. If you want you can add a little batting to make them puff.

You can also fuse 2 pieces of white together and then cut that out as the bone. I was doing a Christmas quilt and Santa's beard allowed the background of his red suit to show through. That is what I did and it worked fine.
