Marti Michell has a set of acrylic templates that work with her books to create a bunch of different blocks in several sizes. I made my storm at sea quilts with them. The fabric is cut into strips, then cut using the acrylic templates on the strips. 4 or so strips at a time can be cut making the process faster. I've used these templates for most of my blocks. They make cutting and assembly so much easier.
www.frommarti.com for the website that explains how the templates work. The books come with a set of full sized paper templates to try the process before you invest in the acrylic pieces.

Thank you for mentioning Marti. I double checked my collection and I forgot I bought her templates. 
