What to do on a snowy day? Quilt, of course!

If you attended the 2016 Forum Retreat, you might remember our one session where we experimented with makng small Lone Star panels from a jelly roll. These were my samples that I shared with the participants. It was a pattern I found in a book called Jelly Rolls by the Lintotts. Once I got home from the retreat, I stashed my blocks, stashed so well I had no idea where they went, still looking for a yellow/gold/red bigger Lone Star, has anyone seen that one? I found them just the other day. So, since the weather has been cold and today snowy, I decided to finish this up, putting the stars together and adding borders to make it fit my queen bed. I've been experimenting with ruler quilting and trying to master feathers, so this is a combination of ruler work and free motion quilting. It took most of the past two days to finish the piecing and get the quilt finished, but this is one more UFO I've finished since Christmas Eve, 6 so far! I still have a big pile left to quilt, including the 2018 forum retreat project. But there are many snowy days ahead, so, onward I go!

That is beautiful. Great progress on all your recent finishes.

I think there are more snow storms in MO,KS & US than we have been getting here. I guess that's all good.

What a great job you did! It's gorgeous. I have so many UFOs. But I'm going to chip away at them this year.

That is beautiful, Jean. I still have my Lone Star block I made at the 2016 retreat - thanks again for all the much needed help!! I have backing for it, but that is the only thing that is different from when I left the retreat. Maybe some day I will get the backing and batting pinned to it and then wait another 2 years to get the nerve to quilt it somehow!! But, you are inspiring me to dig it out and get busy with it.

WOW! That's beautiful! I'm really glad you found them. I'm still hoping to find some stuff from our move ( a year and a half ago.)

Jean, that is wonderful! I have my M* blocks from the 2017 (?) retreat up next on my to do list, hope that turns out as great as your lone star.

That is a beautiful and very different lone star than I've ever seen. What a gorgeous finish.

Just beautiful. Are the blocks stitched with straight seams?

They are strip pieced, then cut apart using a 45 degree ruler to form the diamond shapes. They are easy to make, but tricky to press flat as the edges are all on the bias and can get easily distorted in pressing. That is the key to success in making an 8 pointed star that lays flat. My first block that I made ended up distorted in the middle until I discovered how to press them without stretching the sides.
