    Default Thursday Trivia: COTS

The crown of thorns starfish, or COTS, is a predator that attaches to a coral reef and sucks out the coral's inner soft tissue. Every once in a while, the COTS population booms, leading to outbreaks that cause large-scale reef damage, such as the one that struck the Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary in American Samoa in the 1970s.

In 2015, a massive attack threatened reefs in the Maldives. Disaster was mitigated by volunteer divers who removed 7,396 COTS from the reefs by hand.

Wow. They look so pretty, but they are mean buggers.

Enjoy life and do what makes you happy. Everything else will follow.

Every day I try to do one thing that challenges my comfort zone.

Yeah and don't stick your finger in their mouths cuz they can break your bone. See what you learn when you live in San Diego and your babysitter is getting her masters in marine biology!

42,000 removed by hand last year from Great Barrier Reef.
TRUTH is seldom appreciated, unless you happen to agree with it. When you don't agree, you just call it rude.
