Default Help with cat/snail tail quilt!!!???

Hi, I trying to make a cat quilt with a snail tail square in the middle.

I tried making Jenny's snail tail block based on her tutorial but I did NOT like it - the edges of the triangles "overhang" going around the corners - you can even see it in her quilt on the tutorial behind her - so I modified it a bit to my liking. Now it is a 7" square.

Now that that part is solved, I tried to modify the cat square to match the 7" square, but I just can't quite get the math. I am soooo close, but now I don't know how to make the cat ears so that when that block is sewn to the square above it, the little ear tips won't be cut off.

How did Jenny's cat ears not get cut off on her " Pins and Paws" quilt?????

I am trying to make this for a friends' 50th birthday by the end of February. Any presice help will be greatly appreciated.

All I know is that there has to be 1/4" of the background fabric above the tips of the cats ears. That allows for the 1/4" seam without cutting off the tips of the ears.

Right, but how do you make an extra 1/4" when the corner is "snowballed"? There is no extra 1/4" with that.

Maybe try sliding the snowball more to the corner and then trim the extra snowball overhang off the block after?

Not sure what is in my head got clearly into this thread.....

I've made a sample block of this one.

Jenny did a cat quilt pattern that is essentially the bodies of this pattern without the tessalating tails.

I think it would work if you made the snowball squares a quarter inch smaller than the strip you're sewing them onto. If you line up the corners at the bottom of the ear, you should have space for the next seam at the top. I think! I've never done this....
