I am foreign to the English language, but sometimes I have read women's underwear being referred to as knickers. Is it slang or an old term?

Knickers is an old term, from perhaps 100 years ago. Bloomers is another old term.

In the UK knickers are women's briefs, we also refers to these as "smalls" (or in my case "bigs"). My husband refers to his as "skiddies" an ex Army phrase.

Skivvy comes from the Italian schiva for slave that’s where my war cry to my children was ‘I’m your mother not your skivvy’ came from. English is a funny old language so many regional differences in most countries.

When I was visiting Ireland this fall, my host at the guesthouse referred to them as knickers! I was looking for laundry facilities to wash my knickers!
