    Moda String-Along

Moda is starting a string quilt-along and sewing starts on December 28th:

It started so innocently... a conversation with Jamie and Anna.  We were talking about scraps and that led to string quilts.  I hadn't made one in years, Anna had never made one but wanted to, and Jamie had made one for her family and wanted to make another.  So... maybe an in-office sewing day after Christmas?   Vintage String Quilt.

It sounds like a casual group and I love making string quilts so I'm looking forward to it.

I don't know how I missed your post earlier, but that looks really cool. It would be a great way to use up some of these pieces that I've been gifted!

I'll pass. Most of my strings are >2" wide. I don't think I'd have the patience for this one.

We be stringing! We might have started a day early in the office because well... pictures. Sewing. Short week. One of those things. Clockwise from upper left: Stiffy - our resident hand-appliqué and hand-piecing master is making string blocks using a sewing machine. And the coming-in-May 3 Sisters' collection Cinnaberry. (More on that soon.)That's a box of scraps left from the Color Cuts II samples.Joy! Our super-talented finished-product designer-creator is a new quilter and she made these two gorgeous string blocks using the coming-in-February Boro Wovens collection.

I was given several yards of fabric that really isn't my taste by a woman who wanted to start quilting but got side tracked when her hubs was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I don't know her personally, she's the friend of a friend who meet for coffee several times a week. So I'm going to do what Bonnie Hunter would do, cut that fabric up until it IS pretty! Then I'll add to it from my stash and it should make a great string quilt. When finished, I'll give it back to her to cheer her up.

This is left overs from quilts I have made. I wait until my scrap bin is flowing over then I make these blocks using MSQ paper. It doesn't take long until you have enough blocks for a quilt. I use a lot of white backs on my quilts and save the extra left on the edge and bottom and make the white strips. I make the strips 2.5 inches wide, because its easy just laying down a ruler and cutting on each side. I like the idea of a different pattern for strings quilts. Thanks for posting the link. I have made several of these and they are my GD favorite . Who would ever dreamed something so easy she would like. Feels good to use up those little scraps of fabric.

I ordered the M* 10" square paper, so I'll be starting after they arrive. Meanwhile, I'm still paper piecing for my Jan. door hanging.

Katrina, I use phone book paper. Works fine and it's free if you have a source.

Here are my first 4 blocks. I'm starting with a 1" burgundy strip down the center and ending each side with the peacock feather fabric. I just love string piecing!

Chelea I love the colors you picked!! I never made one of these either. Let's see if I got this right: It looks like it doesn't matter if each string is a different width but that the corners should be the same print where they meet all together in the center of the block?
