Default How to make the diagonal strip border

I purchased the panel and material to make this quilt for my grandson. The kit with the pattern was no longer available and I can not find the pattern anywhere. I can figure out how to put most of it together but do not know how the diagonal border was made (obviously it is strips sewn together) but how are they cut and sewn together, especially looking at the corners. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

To me, it looks like strip sets cut with a 45 degree angle. I am sure someone else will have a more complete description for you. It will make your grandson very happy.

You could also do it as half square triangles with careful attention to color placement.

I'm guessing your question is... what's the strip width so the diagonal pieced border meets at the corners of border #1? There's a formula, but if you knew it, or how to calculate it, you wouldn't have asked the question. So... I'm gonna give you the answer, and hopefully not confuse you (or me LOL) with how to arrive at the width.

    1. Find the length of the border (#1) that you are trying to match.
    2. Divide that length by the number of strips desired.
    3. The finished width of your strips will be 71% of the answer to #2.
    4. Add the seam allowances and make/sew up your strip set.
    5. Cut your strip set to length depending on the desired width of the border. Remember the angle is 45 degrees.

Now here's where you can get into trouble- the width. The width needs to be determined based on the answer to #2. Multiply that number by the number of strips desired on the width. It must be evenly divisible by the answer to #2.

For the corners- Two of the opposing corners are mitered. The other two have triangles added.

Whew! It's tough to give an answer and keep it simple enough to understand. It's really quite easy though. Just sit down and think about it for a minute- or hunt for a tutorial on YT. The two links above didn't give the answers in math terms. I wish they did.

You could do it as HSTs as Chelea mentioned but you still need to know the size to meet in the corners. I just gave you the answer to that as well.

Thanks to everyone who answered! I think I have a basic understanding of what I have to do, although I'll practice with some scraps to make sure I'm understanding and doing it correctly. I'm glad I paid attention to math in school. Who knew "simple quilting" involved so much accurate math.
