    Default Nervous to cut...

I made Jennys charm pack tree skirt.. I love it. I used 2 charm pack, so 9X9, I added my first border, 2.5 inches. But, now I have exactly 1 yard of my outer border fabric. Each time I try to figure how wide I can cut that border... I just get nervous. I wanted to cut it 5inches.... ANYONE??

What is the actual measurement of the quilt?

That adds up to 204". Add 24 inches to that for the angles where the ends meet (at least, just to be safe) and that comes to 228"

a yard of fabric, 5 inch cut border, would give you 7 cuts WOF, times 40" equals 280". If you wanted a 5" finished border, rather than a 4.5" finished you would have to cut at 5.5" which would give you 6 cuts WOF which would be 240"

I am just guessing on the 24" for the angles, but either way I think you should be good

With only a yard of fabric, if you cut 5" strips you will only get 7 strips, your skirt has eight sides.

Now you could sew the strips end to end, and simply sew that strip to one side, trim, then sew to the next side, trim (and repeat until you get all the way around) but two things to consider....

    1. somewhere along the line, you'll have extra seams in your border (not just in the corners)

    2. you will have very little extra fabric @ 5", so if you make a mistake in your cutting/trimming, you could be making another trip to the fabric store.

Myself, I would cut 8 strips at 4.5" and use one strip for each side of the quilt. Yes I would have a bit more scraps in the end, but it's worth the peace of mind, and you could use those scraps to make Christmas mug rugs or something festive.

Well, I cut it at 5... 7 strips. Put it on the short sides first... then on the 4 longer sides... I ended up sewing two pieces together to apply to the last long side. It looks great, I'm happy with it...

Probably should have put long sides first...

And the picture of this is where? Is this the one you were working on at the retreat? I would love to see it finished!
