Default Backing is too small - help

I finally finished the FMQ on a quilt I promised a friend. When I went to cut off the excess batting and backing, I discovered the backing is an inch too small in one portion of the quilt. I thought I had measured twice (or three times) before making the quilt sandwich and pinning it in place. But there is now a gap about four inches long and one inch wide (which tapers off and meets up with the other edges). Clearly the backing was cattywampus when I laid it out and didn't realize it.

What can I do? Am I going to have to unquilt and requilt that portion? I am frustrated, disappointed, and embarrassed.

(Please assure me I'm not the only one who has made such a boneheaded mistake!)

Could you make a label for the quilt and sew it over that area?

And no....you are not the only one who has done something like that.

I have made that mistake on occasion and sometimes it is long and narrow...not suitable for a label. Cut a piece of matching backing and just attach it and your binding will make up the difference.

once you add what is needed, quilt it, and then fold the binding over it no one will ever see it. Been there, done that
