The add a quarter ruler is used in foundation paper piecing. You fold the paper back along the sew line and place the lip of the add a quarter ruler on the fold in the paper. The lip is a quarter inch wide. You cut on the edge of the ruler and it trims the two pieces of fabric so they are exactly a quarter inch from the foundation piecing line. Then you sew. Then you press.

Pretty sure Jenny did a tutorial once with the add a quarter ruler.

I got one as a gift in a Christmas swap and it was clear. Now I can't find it!

My 1/4" is yellow and it works just fine. There is also a 1/8" one I think.
Are the different sizes different colors?

There are 6 & 12 inch in several colors and also Add a Quarter Plus rulers are 2” wide with a beveled edge on the opposite side from the lipped edge. According to the videos the beveled edge can be used to fold the paper back. I found a pink 12” Plus ruler at a shop north of here yesterday while we were visiting DH’s mom so I bought it.

    Thanks for the info everyone.

I have a 1x6" clear gridded ruler like that. I tied a strip of orange selvedge edge fabric through the hang hole. That helps a bit.
