    Default Tutorial question

When Jenny says that a quilt has a 6" border, does she mean that it is 6" finished, and I should cut my strips 6.5 inches? Or does it mean that I should cut my strips 6" and the finished border will be 5.5"? It probably doesn't matter in the long run but I'm trying to finish up a quilt top from a tutorial - not a pattern - and just wondered.

    Thank you for your help!

I suspect she means cut width but you could make one any size you wish.

Now I would assume it is finished size. If she says 6" then cut 6.5". That is my opinion. Which tutorial were you looking at?

Monique, it's the crosswalk pattern. I started it some time ago and I just need to put the borders on. I kind of assumed the same as you, and I'm sure it's not critical, but I just wondered - I hadn't thought of it before! Silly question, I know.

Must not be silly if no one has the definitive answer.

I thought it was finished width. I'd say whichever you want as long as you have enough yardage to cover it. Good question though.

I compared the video transcript of a couple of tutorials to the pattern instructions -- unfortunately, I did not get a definitive answer! In the Totally Tulips tutorial, Jenny says the border is 6", but the instructions in Block and the printed pattern say to cut the border 5.5".

In the 4 x 4 tutorial, Jenny says the border is 5.5"; the instructions say to cut the border in 5.5" strips....which would make the finished border 5".

My takeaway is to make the border whatever width you prefer! I usually add a little extra to my border width, because I figure some of it will be trimmed away when the quilt is squared up.

Checked the Block magazine (vol 3, issue 2)......it says cut at 6"...... hope that helps.

Somewhere in one of the tutorials I remember Jenny saying finished size when referring to the border. I always assumed it was a finished size... i think this is a great question, sometimes patterns are not too generous when giving fabric requirements and that 1/2" can add up fast when cutting for a border.
