    Default Umbrellas?

So I found a pattern and hardware for making your own umbrella - I thought it would be a fun project.

Has anyone else out there made umbrellas? Do you have any advice on fabric choices? How well does piecing the sections work/not work? Did you use outdoor fabrics, or did you waterproof quilter's cotton?

I have looked at that class several times because I think it would be fun, but rarely use an umbrella, so have never taken it.

I made one for a friend last year. It wasn't tremendously difficult. I used quilters cotton and scotchguard. You will need fray-check too. I chose "bordered" type fabric Click image for larger version.

    How cute is that!

It might be fun to try and tackle one of those. It would be funny in Hawaiian fabric. If you've been here at the beach and it starts raining all the tourists pack up and leave and it stops like a minute later. I could sell umbrellas at the beach. lol

This is the one I ordered: http://www.nancysnotions.com/product...and+pattern.do

Is it the same one you made?

Thanks for the tip on the fray check. Good to know

Yes! That's the same one I ordered (from Nancy's Notions) and the same price. I searched for "border fabric" on www.fabric.com and they have a nice selection that would like nice with this umbrella. That is where I got mine but ordered through Amazon which was cheaper.

I'v always wanted to try this. Thanks for posting the link.

Question - has anyone tried using the clear sticky vinyl over the cotton fabric to make it waterproof?
