    Default Is my math wrong?

I started a new quilt today....the Cutting Corners Quilt. I'm following Jenny's tutorial but I have a problem with her math. When she sews 5 jelly roll strips together using a 1/4" seam allowance....she says her width of all the sewn strips is 10". She then pairs it with a layer cake square to sew and cut the blocks.

When I do the math of sewing 5 jelly roll strips together with a 1/4" seam allowance....my width of the sewn strips comes out to 10 1/2"....so you wouldn't be able to use a layer cake square to make your blocks......you'd have to cut your own square at 10 1/2".

Am I losing my mind? LOL

Funny, Elaine - I started something similar yesterday and I'm cutting my strips for 10 1/2 inches - meaning they would be 10 inches finished. So, you are right - it doesn't match up if you are using a layer cake. I am not using a layer cake or alternate fabric in mine, so it will work for me. But, you may want to trim that half inch off the strips - a bit off the top and a bit off the bottom.

Well, thank goodness I am not losing my mind!
    Thanks Sandy!

And I did think about cutting a little off the top one and a little off the bottom one, but I had yardage of my background colour, so I just cut them to the right size.

    Thanks for the reply!

At the 3:15 mark in the tutorial, Jenny does trim off (top and bottom) of the strip set to make a 10 inch piece/strip set so it will match up with a 10 inch solid piece of fabric (layer cake dimension).

I made the cutting corners but I cut yardage so the blocks were 10 1/2".

If you wanted to use two layer cakes, you would have to shave the strip sets to 10".

I made Jenny's Cutting Corners quilt quite some time ago. I got discouraged with how little some of the fabrics showed, so I did the rest of the blocks with HSTs. On some of the blocks, only a small triangle of fabric showed. It wasn't worth all that work. I cut my own fabric, so I didn't have to worry about matching a 10"square.
