    Border

    Hello,
I am getting ready to put the top and bottom borders on a quilt and I have measured the top in the middle and on the bottom of my quilt. Measurements are 45 1/2 - 45 and 45 1/2. When I added the 3 measurements together and divided by 3 I came up with 45.333. Should I split the difference and cut borders to 45 1/4 and ease in the the rest?

Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

That is what I would do. Sew on the side borders then measure for the top/bottom borders.

I would use your 45 1/3 average measurement

I always cut my borders longer than the required measurement, then trim. It just works better for me.

I only measure once, near the middle, maybe a couple feet from the edge, and use that measurement. Cut the border that size, pin the ends, pull the quilt and the border straight, then pin in the middle. Then start filling in the spaces pining about 4" apart, easing everything together. Never had a wavy border yet.

I measure the way Bonny Hunter does at Quiltville.

I cut my borders for the sides first, the lay the border fabric down the middle of the quilt and trim even with the edges of the top and bottom of the quilt top. Then sew on and press. Then cut the borders for the top/bottom. lay across the middle, trim and sew on then press.

I do not have trouble with wavy borders doing this.

I have put quilt tops on my longarm that some used the method of just sewing on then trimming and the edges were wavy. It's more noticeable on a longarm then a sitdown machine.
