Default Political Quilts from Quiltcon 2018

I am a quilter/blogger and often visit/comment on other quilters' blogposts. We admire each other's work, offer advice and support, much like this forum. At this time, there are several fortunate quilter/bloggers who are sharing their impressions of the recently concluded Quiltcon. Not sure how I landed on this page, but I'd be darned if I do not share it with you.

This is a quilting forum so I am curious. Why would you make a political statement with a quilt as your medium? Why not a painting, or a t -shirt, a hat, a sculpture, a poem, a play, a movie, a song?

I support their right to express themselves. But why a quilt? I don't get it.

Maybe because they can quilt and aren't good at any of the other things you mentioned?

That's what I said at the end of the other thread about these. Fabric is a medium to express like paint, stone, metal etc.

These are incredible pieces/works of art. I think I would ask why not a quilt. A quilt can create a memory in many ways for many people. I have appreciated hearing all views.

    Thanks for sharing!

I have designed a political / Americana quilt. If quilts are a part of American (and other country's) histories, why not say it with a quilt? Can you imagine how much these will be worth someday on the Antique Road Show or an international auction company or even a museum? Seriously.

Thanks for sharing that link, Preeti!

I just saw the other threat about political quilts, and I'm going to repeat myself here.

Quilts are traditionally seen as comforting and warm--putting a tough social message on a quilt amplifies that message. It's more challenging on a quilt.

All these quilts tapped into my emotions--"Born a Crime" was particularly piercing. And the hand-quilting of "nevertheless she persisted"? Wow.
