    Default Disturbing

    Good Morning everyone,

My daughter and I went to the sewing and quilt expo in Atlanta this weekend. We were mainly looking for support and the software and accessories for my Juki. We stopped by the quilts of Valor and spoke with some really nice ladies at the beginning of the room. One of them said have you seen the naughty quilts. I had no idea what on earth she was talking about and was so excited to be there I just brushed it off. We went down every isle enjoying all the vendors and buying way too much . (MSQ was there with a booth).

I have debated rather to mention this on the forum, but I am still disturbed by the group that was at the end of the room. I am not going to tell your their name because I will not advertise for them. There was a display of quilts with disturbing political messages and the worst was the ones with nudity. Who would ever dream of putting graphic nude body parts on a quilt. Yes, I believe everyone has the right to free speech, but to me quilts bring joy and comfort. I just can't stomach porn quilts. I took a couple of pictures and sent to my son who is an editor. He told me I was behind the times that this group had been around for awhile. I doubt it will do any good but I am going to write the company that puts on these shows and I do not know if I will go again.

Remember the M* motto "Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle"

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Most of the "classic" masterpieces are nudes.

Quilts have been political for centuries. Before women could vote they made quilts, and flags. Remember the flag, give me liberty to give me death?
Today's politics is in our face, on the news constantly. It is hard to escape. Odd that a company would go political. But after thinking about this, the North American free trade agreement will have a huge impact on fabric. Either we loom the cotton, or send it to Mexico to be loomed.
As far as naughty/nudity.....are these artistically done quilts? I wonder if you were talking about Moda? I could not find content on the net, but my safe settings are probably impacting this.
Have any of you thought about the cotton grown here, loomed in Mexico, printed in Japan, and at last bolted in the states? By tariffing cotton we would have to open the textile industry back up and create many jobs. Not sure if we made it in the USA if the price would stay the same or go down or up.
Blogging ahead.....research in quilting and sewing with a dab of cooking/recipes too.

Nudity can be beautiful. Deliberate porn never is. There IS a very big diffrence.

When I had my cake business at home I did several nude cakes. I was able to do the ladies tastefully like a ribbon over the lower lady parts, but it's hard to do the same with a weenie. lol I stopped doing that one after my girls could see over the table.

I don't think I would of been too bothered, like said each to their own. Just curious, was there a warning sign for the area?

Art is art. Art is very often political. You don't have the right to attempt to censor others' art. If you don't like it, you don't have to look at it.

Further, not all nudity is pornographic. Pornography is content that is specifically designed with titillation as its sole purpose. Do you believe that was the intent of the quilts that you saw?

I did some research just now and surmise you probably viewed the "Threads of Resistance" quilt exhibit, which has been making the rounds of quilt expos and events around the country. I'll be looking for it to come to my area! Thanks for the heads up! I can't wait to see these boundary-pushing art pieces!

I would be disturbed, too. Just doesn't seem appropriate.

I guess I'm behind the times too. Never heard of it. I've seen some fabrics that tend to be a little risqué but not that bad. I have seen patterns for naughty knitted things on Revelry though. I think they are mostly from individuals and not major companies.

If I am right in identifying what the OP saw, it was not a vendor, it was an exhibit of political art quilts. It was meant to be challenging. I'm not sure that any criticism of it is valid--protest speech is meant to be provocative. Sounds like the quilts were very effective! This is like getting mad at Block magazine for having too many patterns and not enough ads.
