    Machine embroidery help

After reading about all the dilemmas and answers from this most helpful and encouraging forum for several years, I have a question.
What size and type of needle, and size and type of metallic thread is best for machine embroidery as quilting?
I wish to add a gold machine-embroidered design around the border of an Asian-style wall hanging.
    Thanks for all your help.
Just love everyone. I'll sort them out later. -God

I would recommend an 80/12 size - but I would also recommend that you do a test sandwich first to make sure that size doesn't damage your fabric. I don't know that I can recommend a specific brand of metallic thread, as I've used several with success but I'm partial to Superior threads. Make certain that you give the thread enough room to come off the spool without twisting and you shouldn't have any problems with breakage.
Sometimes, when there's a raging fire,
it's best not to try to put it out with gasoline.

I use a size 90 needle and slow my machine speed down. I agree with Sandy that you need to do a test sample first. Good Luck.

another vote for size 90 needle with metallic thread.....it has a larger eye and the thread will feed through much better without shredding.

I'll just add to use a thread net so the thread doesn't come off too fast. It's pretty unruly.

Agree that you want the thread to wind off the spool without kinks. I run the thread through the bobbin winder threader (not a loop or wrap though) on top of machine.

Be careful that your thread stand is not behind the hand wheel so it doesn't get wrapped in there.

If you have troubles with the thread, you can probably find a gold embroidery thread to match instead of metallic thread.

            Good luck!

I have a tabletop Bernina embroidery machine that has served me very well for several years now. I'm not sure what size needle I'm using but I can tell you for sure I use the Mettler polyester thread and I've never had any problems. I use the same for the bobbin. I might say though a tabletop emb. machine might be different from what you have.

                Re: Machine embroidery help

Wow, you guys are greatly helpful, as expected. I have done a test sandwich. I have a size 90 needle installed. The thread I am using shreds and breaks. I thought I might need to switch to an embroidery needle, but I also thought I might not be using the best thread. I have DMC gold metallic thread. Another thought is I might need to use the gold thread in the bobbin instead of as the top thread.
                Any comments there?

BTW, the thread I have is on a typical thread spool and feeds as regular thread.

                    Re: Machine embroidery help

                    Rock,

I'm not familiar with that brand of metallic thread. Is it for machine embroidery or hand stitch embroidery?
Is there a shop close by that sells machines/thread?

The one I use doesn't have a name brand but I finally found a video using this one. It's the same spool style and numbers.

I don't have any problems with it either.

You can also use a large coffee cup to put the spool in. The feed of the regular spool is probably causing kinks/breakage. It really does matter how the thread comes off the spool.

                    More thread help 101 here.

I don't do machine embroidery, but I've heard from others that metallic threads are problematic -- both for DSM as well as LAs. I never use metallic thread for FMQ.

The spool is a typical sewing thread-sized spool which fits on the conventional spool holder on my machine. It's possible the thread is for hand-embroidery. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

try threading it through a styrofoam peanut (before it goes through the tension disks) and sitting or hanging it off the spool holder behind and above your machine if possible.
