I think it's personal preference re: starch. I use Best Press for removing wrinkles. I press all my fabrics prior to cutting. When the quilt top is done & the backing is prepared, I use Faultless Spray starch to press both prior to sandwiching & pin basting & quilting. When the quilt is finished, if it's be to gifted to a baby or to Quilts for Kids, I wash the quilt. Larger quilts that I plan to donate to a different organization or a person, I do not wash them.

Would be interested in the recipe. I always thought people made their own starch but I heard someone say that they use spray starch. Is that good to use?

I used to always use Best Press, but then when I heard about the Faultless starch in the white can (can't remember what it's called), I found that it gives more body than Best Press in my opinion. I don't starch nearly as much as I've heard some do, but I too, and still learning after about 5 years of quilting! Welcome and enjoy!

I use Best Press (with coupons from Joann's). However, Leah Day sings the starch song! She sprays heavily and is not concerned because she washes the quilts when she is done. I think she did a Youtube video in the past 30 days re: starch or no starch.

I wash my quilts when they are finished, especially before gifting them.
If anything bad is going to happen to the quilt, it needs to happen before I gift it.
Imagine the shock of receiving a flat crisp quilt, washing it, and when it comes out all scrunchy, thinking that the winkles are your fault, and that you've ruined it, then hide it and say nothing!
Wash it first, and then when you give it in that condition, it stays in that condition.
I had tags made with my name on one side and washing instuctions on the other side. I sew one into every binding.
