Thanks for the contributions to this post. I was just given 20+ cones of serger thread in different colors and wondered if I could use any for quilting (piecing and fmq). I don't have a serger, have seldom sewed any clothes and when I did, I used French seams.

I actually use MaxiLock serger thread for my FMQ on my Tiara. That was actually recommended by my BabyLock dealer. I haven't used it for piecing, though.

I use Maxi-lock for piecing. I haven't used it for quilting, but I wouldn't be afraid to. I currently use Isacord, a polyester embroidery thread.

I started quilting & only had "serger" thread cos that's what I used when I sewed/made clown dolls. I am still too chicken (not as bad as I was, lol) & so it's STID quilting. I figure I've spent enough time piecing that I don't want the quilting to be more visible...specially for a novice free motion quilter. I've never had any quilt to fall apart, come unsewn in 13 years & counting.

Depends on what, how etc I guess.

This is a great thread. I only just saw it and glad I did because I have learned a lot. I've used serger thread for quilting with great success but not for piecing. I may give it a try. Thanks for being so brave to ask a good question.
