Default Do you have to ask if you accept checks now?

You should of seen the look on a yard guys face when I handed him a check. You don't have cash he says? I love that people still carry it, but a check is money too.

I once made a cake for a friends sister. I lost the check in a pile of paper work and finally tried to cash it. She said she didn't owe me because I took too long. Good grief. I finally got paid.

    The yard guy...next.

    Oh , I gave him a 20% tip

I don't take checks any more. I've had too many that bounced.

I still write checks occ in stores but boy the dirty looks I sometimes get from people in line behind me, bc it does take longer to check out.

Our local electric company got bought out by a bigger one sometime in the last year. After the switch, I had a hard time paying my bill over the phone, which is what I had always done. After much delay and frustration, I was finally able to talk to a human who informed me that in addition to my bank account information, they needed my husband's date of birth and Social Security number! For some reason, the person I was on the phone with could not understand my reluctance to provide him with the means to steal DH's identity. So now I send them a check in the mail every month.

I stopped using checks when many places started charging a 'processing fee' when I paid that way.

I was surprised when we moved to Canada and found that checks were hardly accepted ANYWHERE! Man, I was grumpy when I was in the grocery store check out with a basket full of food and wanted to pay by check. Nope. (of course, I had left my credit card at home by my computer because I had ordered something online LOL). I had to drive home, get the credit card and drive back for my groceries. Then I started asking. Any stores? Nope. It's credit card, debit or cash. So far, the only checks that I write are for payments that I mail.

I sell at craft shows during the holidays. I don't want to
accept credit/debit cards (most items are under $10).
I put up a sign saying cash or checks only. Maybe I lose
1 or two sales, but if they want it bad enough they come back with cash.
Never had a bad check in 20 years.

A lot of self-employed business owners (like your yard guy) prefer to get paid in cash. A check needs to go through a bank account and during an audit would need to be reported as income come audit time. Cash can go directly into his pocket - no income reporting necessary therefore no taxes.

I still write checks for most purchases & all bills. Our Whole Foods store won't take checks anymore. Only cash, CC or debit card. I refuse to use a debit card & use my CC mostly for on-line purchases, like fabric, or if I order something from Amazon or to buy used books. When standing in the check-out line, I try to have my check all written out by the time I get to the cashier, then I only have to fill in the amount. Saves time & frustration of those behind me. The world system's goal is a cashless society. I hope I'm in heaven by the time the New World Order put that into place.
