Default Why I pre-wash my fabrics

Yesterday I bought three lovely fabrics for a block swap; one chocolate and two light blue. They were all top end from well known manufacturers and top end price. I prewashed them this morning and the result: the chocolate lost enough dye in the first wash to be of concern but rinsed clear, one of the blues was much softer than the other two fabrics after the sizing and other chemicals had washed out, indicating a lower thread count and hence more shrinkage than the other two. I don't know if my swapee pre-washes or not but am pretty certain she won't have any problems with her chocolate and blue blocks from me.

I'm not trying to convert anyone here but thought that if any newbies out there are still uncertain, this may be helpful.

Thanks for the reminder Mary. I almost always prewash my fabrics (sometimes I skip it if the fabric is going into something like a wall hanging). Better to be safe than sorry is my preference!
