    Default Mini Periwinkle Problem

Hi! I was contemplating trying the mini periwinkle quilt. I have all the supplies, but when I went to look at the fabric requirements the pattern said I needed over 7 yards background fabric (almost double the amount for the backing), is that correct? Is there that much wasted in the process or am I missing some awesome trick somewhere?
    Thanks!

I have the 'stuff' too, so I'll be watching to see what the brilliant folks here have to say.

I had to go back and watch Jenny's video tutorial, and then I remembered why I never made this quilt. As soon as I saw how much of the background fabric is wasted, I knew it wasn't for me. It looks like about 1/2 of the background fabric is wasted, and the scraps are so much smaller than anything I would ever save for another potential project.
