There a lots of fun owl fabrics. I usually go to Etsy to find novelty fabrics.

How about minky for the back of a quilt:

If you use minky, try using 505 basting spray to hold the layers in place when you quilt it.

The top could be an easy disappearing 9 patch and you could use a variety of owl fabric:

A few years ago, I did an owl quilt. I appliqued an owl on top of a jelly roll quilt.

I was still very much a new quilter when I did this. The owl was just basic shapes that I layered on top of each other. Body was an oval with triangles for the ears, eyes where white circles with smaller black circle and the beak (nose) was two triangles joined together.

I did a close zig zag stitch around and then did a little bit of zig zag inside the black of the eyes to look like reflection.

    No feet.

You could just get an owl panel or a wildlife panel with owls in it and put borders on it. Simple is best when you are learning.

The Patch Pals Collection from Quiltmaker magazine has a cute owl.
I made a toucan from the collection, it was just squares. You could color
    coordinate to match the theme.

Fabric.com has a number of owl panels. I like this one: https://www.fabric.com/buy/0416629/o...d-29889bf8fb7b
