I use Bottom Line Poly - and that was based on a recommendation. I'm new at this also so I'm sure others who are more experienced will chime in with their favorites.

Not sure of the weight but from the research I have done, polyester
seems to be the choice. I am making a Grandma's Flower Garden right now.
One thing I found to be useful is thread wax/thread conditioner.
I found it near the checkout at JoAnns fabric store. Lots of EPP sites-
    many mention thread.

My favorite thread for EPP is silk. It may be hard to find in some areas.

I discovered that even the poly thread can shred from rubbing on the cardstock papers. Use shorter lengths! I'm going to try the conditioner, too.

I mainly use polyester, sometimes cotton, sometimes silk. I found the cotton and silk a bit thicker then the poly. Not keen on Bottom line I can't seem to keep the stitches firm.

In case you missed it, Missouri Star had a series of videos back in January with Jenny Doan and Sue Daley doing paper piecing. Some good tips there. here is link

I'm using the 60w poly bottom line.

I watched some YouTube videos on EPP by machine. I think I am going to try invisable thread on top and 80 wt in bottom.

I love to use my 50wt Aurifil thread which is 100% cotton MAKO.
I've tried Coats cotton and Gutermann polyester but Aurifil is so much better. Smooth, it goes thru the fabric without getting tangled like the previous too
