I personally never liked the Marshmellow Fudge. My aunt made it every year. But , my mom and granny both made Old Fashioned Fudge with and without Walnuts. My gramma made Peanut Butter Fudge to die for and Divinity... all of these are my FAVS!!

    3 cups sugar
    2⁄3 cup cocoa
    1⁄8 teaspoon salt
1 1⁄2 cups whole milk, no substitute
1⁄4 cup real butter, no substitute
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Line 8 or 9 inch square pan with foil; butter foil.
In large heavy saucepan stir together first three ingredients; stir in milk, with a wooden spoon*.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a full rolling boil.
Boil without stirring, to 234 degrees F on a candy thermometer (or until syrup, when dropped in very cold water forms a soft ball which flattens when removed from water). Bulb of candy thermometer should not rest on bottom of pan. Remove from heat add butter & vanilla.
Cool at room temperature to 110 degrees F (lukewarm).
Beat with wooden spoon until fudge thickens & loses some of its gloss.
Quickly spread into prepared pan; cool.
    Cut into squares.

Too bad fudge wasn't diabetic friendly.

You can get sugar free fudge. Check out Vermont Country Store online. Several varieties.

I'm not Vicki but checked my Hershey's cookbook. It says 1/4 cup butter.

You use the other 4-1/4 cups to rub yourself down so you can fit in your clothes!

Yikes, no it is not cups of butter. It is Tablespoons. Thanks for asking Jean Marie.
    (bakermom thanks)
And Cindy, you are right, will need that extra butter to fit in clothes. LOL
Good thing I did not try to make these the other night when I was typing.

    ORIGINAL HERSHEY COCOA FUDGE
    2/3 c. cocoa
    3 c. sugar
    1/8 tsp. salt
    1 1/2 c. milk
    4 1/2 Tablespoons butter
    1 Tsp. vanilla
Combine cocoa, sugar and salt in large saucepan. Add milk; bring to a boil, stirring frequently.
Cook until a small amount of mixture forms a soft ball when dropped in cold water.
Remove from heat; drop in butter. Cool to lukewarm; add vanilla, and beat until
    mixture thickens.
Pour into buttered pan and cut into squares.

Ha ha......that would have been some buttery fudge! Knew something wasn't right with that recipe! Thanks....I want to try this recipe as I don't care for the marshmallow or frosting kind. By the way, hubby likes the xtra butter recipe.....lol!
