Jenny Doan has a tutorial with Rob Appell (or whatever his last name is) for the Three Dudes Quilts "Amazing Jelly Roll Quilt" this is really easy and comes out great. It looks like you put a lot more time and work into it than you did.

I really like the look of Cool Water by F&P. Haven't made it yet, and maybe it's too much like a rail fence for your friend. There is a video on you tube.

The zipper quilt is easy, too and I quilted it in long columns and then joined them. Didn't need to send it out for quilting. I joined the three layers by just quilting the verticle sashing.

If at first you don't succeed, try doing it the way your mom told you to in the first place

I'm late joining in, but I, too, would suggest the Irish Chain since you've got the jelly roll. I made my first Triple Irish Chain earlier this year and it was easier than I imagined. Since it was a wedding gift, I included photos that had meaning in the white portions of the quilt. This is the quilt top before it was quilted.

My favorite easy quilts are Double Slice Layer Cake and Four Patch Frenzy.
