    Default Authentic 1930'S Quilt

This is a quilt my grandmother made in her preteens in the 1930's along with her mother (my great-grandmother). It was her very first quilt. The butterflies are made from feed sacks, and I think the white squares are made from flour sack fabric as it's a bit thicker and a little coarser than the butterflies. It was completely done by hand with that beautiful black thread around the appliques and does not have batting, only top and backing as heavy quilts are pretty much useless here in Florida. Out of all the grandchildren, I am the only one that quilts and so this little piece of family history passed to me. Sooo lucky!

I want to reproduce this quilt as it seems simple and straight forward enough. Just need to hunt down some reproduction fabric... and figure out what the background squares are made of.

That is a huge quilt bigger than usual for one from the olden days. How lucky it wound up in your house, with someone who can truly appreciate it and give it a good home.

I believe this quilt was made to cover a bed she shared with her sister. Might explain the size. It covers a double bed. It's definitely been loved and durably made, as neither my grandmother or her mother made anything just for " pretty". They grew up on a farm and were pretty poor. So I imagine this was made out of nessecity. BUT, I love it so much and it covers my bed over top of my comforter. Just kinda feels like getting a hug from the past

How neat to have that quilt from both great-grandma and grandma!

    Treasures, I tell you, treasures.
Blessed are the children of the piecemakers for they shall inherit the quilts!
