Not a flower in sight! a.k.a. A Manly Quilt

I have made it my mission over the next couple of months to not start another quilt until I get at least half of my UFOs finished. This weekend I completed a scrappy baby quilt, and also another throw quilt which I didn't care for, so I used it to practice varius FMQ designs (actually turned out not so bad, good enough for a throw on my couch anyhow).

But the big elephant in my UFO closet was my DH's request that I started about 12 month's ago. He wanted a BIG quilt (he likes to caccoon in his blankets) and it needed to be really warm, and NO FLOWERS. In other words "A Manly Quilt".

I made the top using (2) Woolies II layer cakes, cotton batting, and flannel backing (this should be really warm ), and Jenny's tutorial on the Double Slice Layer Cake. After getting the top done, I took it to my LQS to rent their longarm machine. After three hours of thread constantly breaking, despite all attempt to correct the problem I only got about 1/8 of the quilting done and gave up in disgust and tears. And the quilt was put into the UFO closet.

Well on Sunday, I decided to drag it out, and since this was going to be totally a utility quilt, I wasn't overly worried about how pretty the quilting looked, so I spray basted the portion of the quilt that wasn't already quilted and using a walking foot on my Singer 201, did simple lines of straight stitching at random intervals.

After several quilting & binding sessions, my arms are tired and sore, the quilt isn't "pretty", but it is Manly and not a flower in sight.

Just in time, as the temperatures are dropping, so DH will be able to snuggle under it tonight.

quilt is folded in half, roughly measures 72X90

I love it. I think it came out great! And it does look warm and inviting. These are my favorite kinds of quilts, quilts you are not afraid to use.

I think it is fabulous. If DH loves it, that is really all that matters.

I love this, and it just cost me some $ because I had to order the layer cakes to make one just like yours!
