Blue painter's tape!!!! I used 3/4" tape and stitched on either side of each strip of tape - lots of work, but worth the final result. I taped all in one direction first - quilted that, removing the tape as I finished with that row. For the first direction of quilting, I had put all of the tape in place at once, which wasn't good because some of the tape started to come loose with all of the handling of the quilt. So, when I started the second direction of quilting, I taped just the center sections first, quilted those, then moved on from the center outward on one side, then the other.
There was a definite learning curve, but by the second half I had a system down and it went pretty quickly (I also didn't have to deal with safety pins at that point either...). I would use this method again for modern quilting.

Looks great - can't wait to see the rest of it. I always have trouble with the painters tape shifting and lifting when I move the quilt. Maybe I need to buy better tape?
