    Default Antique Quilt

Went to visit mom today, took my camera and got a couple of shots of an antique quilt in her guest room. This Double Wedding Ring quilt was hand-stitched, hand-quilted by my paternal great Aunt. Her name was Alphosine and she went by Alpha. Her husband went by Toad. Gotta love those early 20th century backwoods Georgia nicknames! Also including a picture of Aunt Alpha and Uncle Toad.

If you can't see it from 50 yards away on a galloping horse, it doesn't matter.

What a beautiful quilt! She even made sure to coordinate the colors of the quilt back then not everyone had easy access to fabric. You have a beautiful family heirloom there.

So beautiful! Makes me so nostalgic for my Big Mama's quilts. I have no idea where they all went. She went to live with her son in Michigan when she was 85 and I don't think he had any idea of the value of her handcrafted work. When she died he just got rid of stuff. By your mom having this treasure and still being able to have it on display in the guest room is remarkable.

I'm always so amazed by you hand quilters. The consistency of the stitching and the beauty of the design is really remarkable, to say nothing of the time involved! How lovely that you have both the quilt and the photo of your aunt and uncle.
    Thanks for sharing!

This is special. It is also a reminder for me to document the history of some of the quilts that I have from my grandmother and her sister. I don't know that my children and grandkids will know or appreciate these, since they never knew them and both died when I was less then 10 years old. So most of these are at least 50+ years old.
