    Default Rising Star Quilt...question

In the tutorial for the Rising Star quilt, you mention using 5" squares rather than 10" squares. My question is: how wide would you suggest the strip pieces be when adding them to a 5" square?

If the 10" uses 2 1/2" wide strips, I'm wondering if the smaller squares should have a 2" or maybe even a 1 1/2" strip (or would that be too narrow to even show up)?

Thanks for being YOU! I love Missouri Star Quilt Company.

Since the 5 inch charm version is not demonstrated in the tutorial....you might think about doing test blocks with different variations to see what look you like best. It is YOUR creation, there are no rules when it comes to how you want your quilt to look. Do you have enough "spare stash fabric" to do test blocks?

Doing test blocks helps you to become are adaptable to any pattern and widens your creativity; it has helped me to be able to look at a photo and figure out how the quilt was constructed. With enough practice at test blocks and how you want it to look....a better quilter/piecing guru you become.

And test blocks can eventually be a sampler quilt.

10 to 2.5 strips would equate to 5" and 1.25 inch strips. For the same look.

But personally, I wouldn't go below a 1.5 inch strip. I think it would work and you would not lose so much of your star.

I did sample blocks using 5" squares and 2" and 1.5" strips. The 2" strips made a block with a "fatter" star. The 1.5" strips make a block with a star that looks more like the 10" block.
