Reminds me of the periwinkle-its artistic cousin

Thanks, Susann. But I really wouldn't use any of that fabric with which to make a quilt. They were scraps...I just wanted to see what the size of the star would look like using a charm. I wasn't sure about all the background space using a layer cake. And you're right! It does remind me of the periwinkle. This might be easier.

I like the look of the thicker star. I wonder how it would look if the ends of the stars were moved so you would not lose the points when you sew the blocks together?

I was thinking the same thing, Papa. Maybe if you run your seam off the edge just as you are getting to the 1/4" seam area?

Yeah, that's the first thing that bothered me about my block. I wondered about those points. They would definitely be gone.

If you read the comments section, they talked about leaving a 1/4" at the end to make your points and you can use 1 1/2" or 2 1/2 strips on a 5" sq, just go in 1" when you begin to sew instead of 2". Hope that made sense!

I made a sample block with 5" squares as I am looking for a pattern for a baby quilt. It is cute, but it the seams are very bulky. If I decide to make a quilt with this, I may alternate the star blocks with solid grey blocks, or trim the material from under the first star point to reduce the bulkiness.Click image for larger version.

They are very bulky. It would probably be better to trim the excess away but the tutorial doesn't call for it.
I've had to adjust a few blocks, they weren't giving me that 4 square in the center unless I undid and redid which strip was on top.
    Here's the 4 I have finished.

    I only make square things.
