I've put the washer in backward also. But now I forget how I figured out which way it went.

Also I didn't realize that I could take the whole thing apart to clean everything until I finally found a tutorial on it. I have one of the Martelli ones.

I had horrible trouble with two brand new fiskars rotary cutters I got at Joanns (that's all they had). Brand new out of the package neither would make a clean cut. I sliced my finger open and was actually hurting myself trying to get them to cut. Finally, I ordered an olfa cutter from Amazon and it works like a dream. No problems whatsoever.

Also make sure that the washer is not too tight. I have 3 different Fiskar ones and they are great.

    Here's a good demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24niAZnwT-Q

The washer should curve downward and that is what should be against the blade.
Sometimes, when there's a raging fire,
it's best not to try to put it out with gasoline.

The washer should curve up like the brim of a cowboy hat if you have an Olfa cutter. On their website Olfa has good videos showing how to change the blades on the standard, ergonomic and splash models.

I dropped a new cutter with a new blade on the tile floor once and it never worked right after that. I also know that even if the cutter itself is not damaged, just dropping it on a hard surface will ruin the blade.

    Guess how I know that?

I accidentally did this once, and it was very hard to tell.....they really stick together!

Thank you all for these helpful suggestions. I'll try them until I find what works.

    Getting stuck in/on what?

I'm wondering if you need a new cutting mat. They DO wear out.
