I have no idea, but how terribly frustrating! I hope this never ever happens again.

That is such a cozy looking quilt. The red binding and ties really sets it off. Makes me think of hot chocolate and good books.

It's a really nice looking quilt.

I have used flannel in the past. I have only used it for backing, with a regular cotton top. I never pre washed. Just threw it in the washer on delicate and half dried it, then hung it on a line to finish drying.

I am sorry you had these issues. To put so much work into something and then to have to correct it is really frustrating. I am sure the next quilt will go much easier.

I'm sorry you had this trouble with your first quilt. On a brighter note, your quilt turned out really nice. It looks totally snuggly and inviting. The red ties look cute.

I'm so sorry you had all that extra work on your lovely quilt. What a pretty quilt! Live and Learn. Thanks for your post, there were some good tips here, (as usual). Your colors are beautiful.

Your quilt is so beautiful! So very warm and cuddly, and love your colors!

I have worked with flannel often as backing and on ragged quilts, but this weekend am going to start a baby quilt with flannel precuts and yardage. I am going to prewash neither and use 1/2 inch seams and pray for both the baby this quilt is for and for a great result.

Came here searching for info on prewashing flannel, thanks for the tips! This is my first post, going to go intro myself now.

I sew a great many charity blankets, using Jenny's tutorial, self binding receiving blanket method. I love using flannel. Using whatever I can find at Joanns or Handcok, but not anything I would consider high end or close to the Woolies flannel. Trick is 1/2 inch seam allowance, and I also have serged the edges. I have tried pinking, didn't work.

Absolutely love the way it turned out though. You can't and shouldn't wash pre cuts so that would not have helped any. A larger seam allowance probably would have made a huge difference. You really do need to allow for considerable shrinkage with the finished product. The only time I pre wash my flannel is when using for backing. If the top and back are both flannel the are going to shrink the same so it doesn't really matter.
Blankets wrap you in warmth, quilts wrap you in love
