I hardly use freezer paper at all. Simpler shapes like leaves, stars, flowers and that I just cut out of the fabric. Then I fingerpress all the borders and then stick it on with pins and then needle turn. Bigger parts like houses, trees, also smaller, more difficult shapes I draw onto normal paper then trace it on fabric. I also baste bigger pieces, then pin them onto the fabric and sew. What I find makes the whole thing much easier are long, really long and thin needles!
By the way - quilting over here is a very expensive hobby, did you know that? All the equipment and especially the beautiful fabrics come from the states and it's the shippingcosts which makes it so bad! For one yard of Moda fabric you have to pay around 17 $ on average. A roll of freezer paper costs 14 $!
